Retro Dead City "Pub and Diner" Starter Pack

Love The Last of Us? The Walking Dead? COD zombie mode? Ever wanna make your own zombie game? Ever think "why isn't there a zombie JRPG"?

If the answer to any of that is "yes", then this is for you. If the answer is "no, lol" then... uh... this is STILL for you. Maybe they aren't zombies. Maybe the red stuff is cherry pie filling. Use your imagination!

This asset pack is presented in monochrome to fit the theme of a classic zombie movie along the lines of the one that arguably kick-started the whole genre:  Night of the Living Dead. The aesthetic is loosely 1980s inspired which affects props especially.

This STARTER KIT is a more expansive asset pack than my usual. It is intended to include most of the basic elements required to get started making your game. A list of what is included can be found below. This pack was over a year in the making and is the starting point of a brand new THIRD theme to join Retro Cybercity and The Nine Realms. I will be posting an announcement that includes some details about the future of this theme so watch for that!

The pack is top-down perspective and scaled at 16x16 by default. 48x48 versions of tiles, props, and characters are also included as I've found blowing up 16x16 assets to 3x is a superior method for importing custom art to RPG Maker engines. Though designed around RPG Maker, this package can be used in various game development engines, including Unity and Godot. The palette is a simple grayscale with two added shades of red and orange that I use sparingly to accentuate some aspects of the pack's art direction.

Like all the blood!

Housekeeping Notes:

Unless otherwise indicated, all materials are offered in PNG format.

I DO NOT use AI for any part of my creative process -- all of my work is hand-made in Aseprite.

All character sprites are presented with 4-directional movement and 3-frame walk cycles.

What Does It Include ?

  • TWO full tilesets. One for "interior" and one for "exterior" scenes but feel free to mix and match!
    • Both tilesets have A5 "floors and walls" sheets as well as B, C, D, E sheets that include props and variants.
  • A variety of animated props including machines, doors, lighting, and more.
  • Eight "hero" character sprites with 4 directional, 3-frame movement animation.
    • Four unique waitress characters.
    • One cook.
    • One "academic" middle aged man.
    • One "med student" young man.
    • One "survivalist" elderly lady.
  • Portraits in a brand new style, one for each "hero" character. They are intended to resemble polaroids.
  • Four distinct "zombie" character sprites with 4 directional, 3-frame movement animation.
  • Four enemy "Battler" sprites, one for each zombie. These are intentionally "loose" and minimalist in style.
  • RPG Maker compatible  UI sheet w/ cursors, window graphics, etc  (very basic)
  • RPG Maker compatible "iconset" sheet w/ item sprites and UI sprites

This pack does not  include:

  • Autotiles
  • "Action" animations for characters ala ARPGs like Zelda.
  • Complex UI elements (I am a beginner here)
  • Background Art for combat engine (I may do this in the future)
  • Mockups (I will be adding these eventually)
  • "DEMO" version to try before you buy (I will also add this eventually)

Will There be Updates?

Yes. This pack is a "starter kit" but it is subject to the same approach I take to updating other packs in my store. If I have ideas that belong here, they will show up here eventually. I am also interested in YOUR ideas about things I may have overlooked!

Are the zombies also four directions?

Yes! I could do a better job of showing it but ALL of my character sprites are 4 directions. Occasionally I will use a flip for the left/right but I usually try to respect my own asymmetric character designs haha.

I think, for now, the character sprites in this pack are flips. I will eventually change that in an update.

Left/right flip is also totally fine for me, thank you!!

Love this! Definitely will buy if you ever add player shooting animations w/ guns.

Thanks!

Animating even my relatively simple sprites is a huge undertaking. It may come down to flaws in my work flow or something, but I’ve never been able to think up a way to do it at scale. I have over 200 unique character sprites across my various packs for itch (released and unreleased).

So the main question for me is always “which sprites get the animations?” Do I use a “heroes only” approach where only a handful of my sprites get the full suite of animations? Do I use a blank template sprite w/ all the animations included and just leave my customers to do the editing themselves? Will people actually buy that or is it a non-starter to force users to edit sprites?

Any thoughts you might have about this could be helpful.

Love it! Look forward to those demos and mockups! And also to what people will end up doing with this!

Thanks! Since horror is so popular w/ RPG Maker devs, I hope this gives someone some ideas!
