Retro Cybercity Streets Tileset (Updated to v2!)

This pack is an exterior street pack and includes what you need to make vibrant urban cyberpunk street scenes!

This asset pack is for creators who are looking to try a cyberpunk or futuristic scifi aesthetic that takes cues from the analog era of the 1980s and 90s. Think Blade Runner or Ready Player One with an SNES/SEGA Genesis style color palette.

It includes tiles and objects in an "urban streets" theme reminiscent of run down city districts in a cyberpunk setting. There are alternative versions of many of the objects and tiles included so that you have creative freedom with building environments as you wish. These assets can certainly be used beyond a cyberpunk or urban streets theme for building out maps and environments. The pack is top-down perspective and scaled at 16x16. With some tweaking, it can be used in various game development engines, including Unity and RPGmaker. The pack uses the palette BLKNX64 by

ANNOUNCING V2 Update!

The v2 update for this pack makes the following changes:

  • Updated format of all sheets to be RPG Maker compatible out of the box.
  • Added several variant objects and tiles in addition to what was already present in the pack.
  • Revamped the old BONUS car sprite -- this pack now includes FOUR car sprites with improved design, but they are all static. Animated versions will come along later.
  • Added a few animated objects including doors and a fire barrel. I will likely animated more of the props here but if you have suggestions, let's hear 'em!
  • Included the mockup images from the sidebar as reference material. The characters are sold separately.

RE: Old Versions

I have removed the old version of the tileset from this page. All the content is now in one single zip file for your convenience.

If you have purchased this pack and require access to "Legacy" content at some point, please contact me and I can send you the old stuff.

What Does It Include?

This pack includes:

  • Variety of ground, building, roof, and wall tiles for exterior scenes.
  • Specialty tiles for exterior appliances such as satellite dishes, panels, and more.
  • Dozens of objects and props with variants, including over 20 unique signs in 3 orientations.
  • 4 static car sprites, two distinct designs with an extra variant each.

Will There be Updates?

As of June 21, 2024 the pack has been re-released as v2 with many changes and additions.

I'll record future updates in this section.

hi! Bought your tiles for Rpgmaker MZ. You can ignore the email I sent. I just saw on one of the other sets I bought that they aren’t set up for autotile. I think I have them loaded in the right slots (a5, b, c, d, e), so I’ll try making a map again tomorrow and let you know if I have any other issues. Love this set, and it goes great with the characters I made so hoping I can get it working.

Hi there. I don’t think I’ve seen an email from ya, unless it was under a different name?

Anyways… yes, this tileset doesn’t have autotiles. Autotiles are nice but they take forever to make and I personally prefer not to use them so I don’t make them too often. If enough people wanted them though…

So the way RPG Maker MZ works, you have to set your resolution and pixel size manually. It defaults to 48x48 so you may need to resize the sprites (I can help with this if you need it) but you can also set it to 16x16 in the System Menu for your game project in RPG Maker MZ.

Once you’ve got the right size in, you need to create a tileset in RPGMMZ and use the art you bought from me. You don’t need a specific tileset or autotiles for this to work – the tilesets just need to be the right size and they need to be imported correctly. RPGMMZ creates a larger tileset from several tileset layers so the way I format my packs follows suit.

Again, let me know if you’re stuck on this. It can take getting used to.

I adjusted the tileset by enlarging 300% (to make it 48x48) and it worked great! It even mostly autotiles within rpgmaker, if you're careful with the placement. Thanks so much!

(1 edit)

Ah yep. I also enlarge most of my stuff when I use RPGMMZ rather than use the native 16x16 but I can’t remember why, been doing it so long.

The way I put tiles together in the tilesets, it SHOULD be intuitive what’s supposed to go where – but I’m always interested in feedback cuz I don’t want these things to be confusing haha. This is also why I am now including my mockups in the packs. If you haven’t yet, please download v2 of the Streets pack which should include them. They may help you with any tricky tiles or objects and how to place them.

Cheers! Your characters look very charming!

This looks so cool! is the vehicle pack still coming?

Haha yeah. It is like the white whale of this theme. I crack away at it every so often but I’m never satisfied. Right now, I could release it with only a couple of car variants and some mech suits but I really want it to be worthwhile on release.

More people ask, faster I’ll do it. Anything in particular you’re hoping to see?

Ooh a mech suit :) well mostly a few regular cars and an armored vehicle that say dystopian police forces would use.

What is this piece meant to be for?

The ones with the dashed and dotted double lines.  Are they meant to be the edges of roads like painted lines or?

(+1)

Do you mean in the tiles, not props? There are “sidewalk” tiles with bright blue dashes and dotted lines, these are just meant to be fancy sidewalk “tech” like lighting or to suggest networking running through everything.

There are also road-paint tiles that are either weathered (chipped, broken up) or clean (no breaks, just clean lines) that are meant for roads, yes.

I probably should have included the sidewalk tiles as part of a mockup to demonstrate their purpose more clearly but I hope this answers your question!

Yes, it does, thanks!!

Cheers!

I like the pack, any more shadowrun type stuff you do, I'll pick up later.

I will for sure be doing more. I have the beginnings of a “Dock” area pack, a vehicle pack (incl. mechs), and more. It’s always tough to decide how much to include, how to break things down so they don’t get out of hand, etc.

Glad you like it! Feedback and suggestions are always welcome!

I like your pack very much.

Thank you so much, that’s really gratifying to hear. Any additions you’d like to see or even entirely new packs in this theme that you think would be cool?

I have a new pack series in the works and the first parts of it are coming out tomorrow. It’s a fantasy pack based on Norse mythology and the first bundle will have a character pack (24 characters w/ walk cycles) and an outdoor tileset with a village theme. Stay on the lookout as the style is similar to this, just a different palette and aesthetic. A clever creator could easily blend the packs to make something really out there.

But that said, I’ll definitely be adding more to the Retro Cyberpunk series as well. I have several packs on the go with that, including an item icon pack, a “docks” themed pack, a vehicle pack, and more. I wanna eventually get to a one release a month schedule, but right now it’s more like a couple of packs at the same time, every 4-6 months. Haha. I’ll get faster.

I am so touched to hear this, I am a fan of cyberpunk and love all the works on this theme, your work is very good, I like it very much, will keep following you

Thanks!
