Retro Cybercity Item Sprite Pack

This is a basic items and weapons (icons/objects) pack to fit with my Retro Cyberpunk theme! These can be used as icons or as item graphics and the pack comes with both a 16x16 native size sheet as well as a 48x48 RPG Maker compatible version.

This asset pack is for creators who are looking to try a cyberpunk or futuristic scifi aesthetic that takes cues from the analog era of the 1980s and 90s. Think Blade Runner or Ready Player One with an SNES/SEGA Genesis style color palette.

It includes item-type (icons for menus) objects for use in cyberpunk or science fiction or even modern-set RPGs. The primary use of these objects is as icons to signify items in a menu, but they can be used as map objects as well with some tweaking!

The pack uses the palette BLKNX64 by @blkirl.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to literally doubling in size as well as the decision to only have one item pack (rather than incremental packs which was my original plan), the price of this pack has increased by $1 USD. The good news? It's still probably underpriced and will be on sale frequently!

Housekeeping Notes:

Unless otherwise indicated, all materials are offered in PNG format.

I DO NOT use AI for any part of my creative process -- all of my work is hand-made in Aseprite.

What Does It Include?

308 distinct pixel art items/icons in the Retro Cybercity style!

This pack includes:

  • 154 items total, breaking down, from the top:
    • 28 Gun Type weapons, split into pistol, rifle, smg, shotgun, and "exotic" categories!
    • 14 Melee Type weapons including bats, swords, knives, and more!
    • 14 Throwing Type weapons including grenades, shuriken, and more!
    • 14 Tech Headgear Items including headsets, goggles, gas masks, and more!
    • 14 Tech Key Items including key cards, computers, and more!
    • 14 Medical Items including syringes, first aid kits, pills, and more!
    • 14 Food and Beverage Items including adult beverages, fast food, and of course NOODLES!
    • 14 Hat Type Items including toques, caps, helmets, and more!
    • 14 Clothing Type Items including vests, jackets, shoes, and more!
    • 14 Misc. Key Items including toys, dice, ID badges, and more!

As of v2, this pack now includes:

  • 154 new items, breaking down from the top:
  • 28 new guns, same split as before
  • 14 new melee weapons
  • 14 new throwing/explosive weapons (now includes rocket launchers!)
  • 14 new tech headgear items incl. AR/VR visors, headphones, and more
  • 14 new medical supply and "key"items
  • 28 new food and beverage items incl. chips, drinks, and even some Resident Evil style herbs and herb mixtures
  • 14 new hats and helmets
  • 14 new general clothing items incl. shirts, jackets, shoes, and gloves
  • 14 new toys and misc items

Will There be Updates?

I've decided that this will be a one-stop shop for all item icons in the Retro Cybercity theme. Stay tuned for further updates.

V2 Update:

The size of the pack has effectively doubled from 154 to 308 items with even more variety than before.

Are there types of items/icons I'm neglecting? I do have some plans for skills/abilities and more general or conceptual icons that don't easily fit the "items" designation.

wow man you are on fire with updates! I have my news feed packed with your things, I love them, and I'm planning to buy your bundle soon to start a prototype for the first part of 2025. Keep up the good work!

also you probably know this, but when devs see an artist constantly updating the packs (even with small updates like fixing a small error)  that motivates purchasing because you can tell the packs are not abandoned. Cheers.

Thanks! I agree!

I have a history of being pretty slow and intermittent with updates and new stuff. My ADHD brain makes it hard to finish things I’m doing on spec but I have a TON of stuff no one’s seen yet including a whole third theme that I’ll finally be launching this month – a year after I first teased it. Ugh. Haha.

As you develop your project, feel free to suggest additional content that you may need. I’ve been able to add things to packs based on similar feedback (the pizza parlor stuff in the Vendors tileset came from user request, for example).

I know it sounds cheessy but man you are accomplishing more with your ADHD than the average person, so don't let that get in the way. I'll surely send some feedback once I get the packs, the stuff I need is mostly Sci Fi/Space compatible.

That is really, really kind. I hope you stick around! I have a theme in the planning stages (inspired by Starfield and 80s space opera) called “Offworld Colonies”. This theme will be the same “setting” as Retro Cybercity and use the same palette.

It helps my creative process to have light “lore” for all my stuff, meaning something like Nine Realms is a cohesive Norse Mythology inspired setting just like Retro Cybercity is a cohesive 80s-inspired cyberpunk setting. One of reasons I like Cyberpunk 2077 as an influence is because so much of it is inspired by the same movies and books I grew up with.

great theme wow, and I can clearly tell you have a good cohesive pattern, like if you read any game design books, thats the first thing you need to look for, the art should be all cohesive, I'll be waiting for that 80s space opera style is right what I was looking for!

Hey I just bought this and love working with it. I was wondering if you would be selling any game kits or working demos soon?

Hi! Thanks for the compliment!

What are you looking for in a game kit or demo? I have thought about it a bit but not gotten very far in making one.

An updated and usable ver of your game jam sub game with you cyber assets built in. Tilesets, char sprites, icons, facesets. With Commercial rights to use.

(1 edit)

Haha I did ask what you’d want! Unfortunately I don’t see myself doing any themes from the Bathysphere art style much less a playable demo. More likely I’d do a Nine Realms and Retro Cybercity Demo. I have a third theme in the works (for way too long now… I first hinted at it like a year ago) and that will probably launch w/ a playable demo to show off how the assets are used together.

Shouldn’t be a problem re: Commercial Rights – if I created something like this I’d treat it as an extra tool for devs who need it and sell it separately. Or, if there’s no market for that, I could see adding it as an optional DL to some of my existing content.

I’ve played with the idea of “starter kits” that include less overall assets from each category (icons, portraits, sprites, tiles, etc) but with enough bases covered for ppl to buy ONE kit and start making their game w/o having to wait for me to get around to missing asset categories. Additional assets would then become like “booster packs” – don’t mind my TCG lingo, it just seems like a good analogy to what I initially thought I’d do. Right now I have no idea if that would even work (probably too pricey? portraits are expensive for example). That was another way I thought I might be able to incorporate demos built specifically to show users how I do things.

What I should really do is create a discord or Kofi or something so ppl like yourself can suggest ideas and have a say in where my work is going since I often wind up spread thin between a bunch of competing, unfinished new content! Too many ideas, not enough time!

No worries. Just speaking for myself I wish more people sold kits. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I decided to finally try making a game with GameMaker Studio, after years of contemplating about it, and I am more than glad to have stumbled upon your creations! The perfect starting point for what I'll be trying to make. Whenever I have something worth showing I would gladly send you an update. Also, I would like to ask if we can edit the sprites? Cheers

What a nice message! Thanks!

Also, yes, you are free to edit the sprites for your project. A lot of people have done things like taken a hairstyle from a character sprite and swapped it with another sprite. There’s probably a whole lot you can do w/ these item sprites just by tweaking things like color.

Thanks so much for your reply! I have already been using the asset pack, mainly to practice, so I don't actually need to alter something so far, but it's nice that we can. Also thank you for the ideas, that hairstyle idea is actually brilliant! Whenever I have something worth presenting with your asset pack, I will gladly let you know. Thanks again!

Thank you! I would love to see anything you do and I can even offer feedback and advice if you need it as I work in game dev and I’ve done a whole lot of pixelin’.

Nice asset pack. Underpriced in my opinion.

I’m still figuring that stuff out! What pricing would you recommend?

Based on the number of assets + resolution of each asset, I'd say $3.99 would be a good deal for you and others.

Good to know. I probably won’t increase the price of this pack, but there will be future packs!

Great Asset!
