Retro Cybercity Drones, Bots, and Mechs Character Pack

This asset pack is for creators who are looking to try a cyberpunk or futuristic scifi aesthetic that takes cues from the analog era of the 1980s and 90s. Think Blade Runner or Ready Player One with an SNES/SEGA Genesis style color palette.

It includes a variety of character sprites that represent various designs for robots, drones, and mechs. There is even an extra large "spider mech" included. These designs are meant to fit into the larger aesthetic of this theme and the concepts (mech suits, more robots, etc) overall have been heavily requested since the theme was originally released.

The pack is top-down perspective and scaled at 16x16 by default.  A 48x48 version of each tileset is also included as I've found blowing up 16x16 assets to 3x is a superior method for importing custom art to RPG Maker engines. Though designed around RPG Maker, this package can be used in various game development engines, including Unity and RPGmaker. The pack uses a customized version of theBLKNX64 palette by @blkirl.

Housekeeping Notes:

Unless otherwise indicated, all materials are offered in PNG format.

I DO NOT use AI for any part of my creative process -- all of my work is hand-made in Aseprite.

This pack includes:

  • THREE mech suit variants both empty and with a pilot (so 6 sprites in all)
    • Basic -- a "skeletal" mech suit w/ no extras, the default basis for any future variants
    • Construction -- a yellow and gray construction suit mech
    • Combat -- a yellow and black combat mech
    • All variants have 4 direction, 3 frame walk cycles as usual
    • "Empty" variants allow you to put whatever pilot head design you want! The Construction and Combat mechs include helmet versions to represent a pilot.
    • Includes instructions on how to make your own mech pilots w/ other RCC sprites you may have purchased or made yourself.
  • EIGHTEEN drones and bots, incl. variants
    • Assistron Basic (medical version incl. in Vendors+ Tileset)
    • Easybot Basic and Easybot Server (Server variants incl. in Vendors+ Tileset)
    • Scooter (small rolling drone like a roomba)
    • Rollerbox L7
    • Powerpal (walking battery)
    • Hermes Messenger Bot (two variants included)
    • Oracle Autoeye and Oracle Beholder (surveillance drones)
    • Walktank Basic and Walktank Rescue ("dog" drones)
    • Hoverbuddy Series
      • Basic
      • Journo (heavy duty camera drone)
      • Secure (police drone)
      • Riot (police drone w/ extra mounted less-lethal weapons)
      • Tactical (stealth drone)
      • Loader (delivery drone, incl. "loaded" and "unloaded" variants)
  • BONUS Large Spidermech Vehicle (or autonomous robot)
    • available w/ 3 frame walk cycles in FRONT and REAR directions ONLY
    • might include sideview sprites eventually

All of the above are offered in NATIVE 16X16 size as well as a 3x UPSCALED (so 48x48) base size. Examples are pictured in the promo material to the right. In cases of asymmetrical design, the sideview sprites are different but not necessarily pictured here.

This pack does not include:

  • 32x32 variant sheets ( you can easily upscale 16x16 to 32x32 if needed!)
  • Human character sprites aside from a generic bust used for the BASIC variant of the Mech suit sprites

Will There be Updates?

Yes indeed. I plan to use the mech BASIC variant to iterate a pile of different mech designs and they'll pretty much ALL be included in this pack.

These are excellent and reasonably priced! Very curious how well they'd scale up to 48x48 with Nearest Neighbor. The piloted mech sprite I see in the preview reminds me a lot of Graft from Phantom 2040 for whatever reason, but that's kind of a deep cut and I'd be amazed if you'd even seen it.

These actually come w/ both 16x16 and 48x48 variants. For RMMZ projects, I don’t use the native sprite size options to make the 16x16 plug and play. I upscale everything 3x and it just winds up looking better.

Anyways, these scale perfectly and retain pixel perfect format as long as you’re not mashing them w/ other resolutions.

I don’t know Phantom 2040 but maybe I’ll have a look at it next time I need some mech inspo!
