Nine Realms Nidavellir Dwarves Character Sprite Pack

Welcome to Nidavellir, the underground region of the Realm of Svartalfheim, forever dark and cold.

This is a realm shared between the dwarves and the dokkalfr (dark elves) who live on the surface. The dwarves, in their deep delves, keep to themselves and guard their civilization and its treasures with utmost secrecy. Master shapers of weapons, machines, and magical artifacts, the dwarves are often sought out for these skills.

This asset pack is for creators looking to work in the fantasy genre but with the aesthetic of Norse mythology (vikings!) as a primary influence.

The pack includes a diverse set of dwarven character sprites with 4-directional, 3-frame walking cycles ready for your game project. The pack is top-down perspective and scaled at 16x16 by default. This pack can be used in just about any game engine, though creators may need to make modifications to the size and orientation of sheets.

The pack mixes together the warm colors and slightly bleak vibes of the comfy52 palette by bess.

What Does It Include?

This pack includes 20 Total Character Sprites w/basic,  3-Frame Walk Cycles in four directions. Includes:

  • 6x "villager" NPCs
  • 4x "warrior" NPCs
  • 2x "leader" NPCs, one a "dwarf king" and the other a "dwarf queen"
  • 2x "miner" NPCs
  • 2x "blacksmith" NPCs
  • 2x "brewer" NPCs
  • 2x "mystical" NPCs, an alchemist and a priest (Jan 18/24 Bonus!)

These sprites are meant to create a diverse population for a dwarven city or town in a JRPG, with a variety of roles covered.

Will There be Updates?

I may add a few more NPCs to this pack over time, especially any that don't fit into another theme idea. Other than that, it'll likely be the usual bug fixes and updates if I change things about how I design this type of sprite.

Update: v2 Character sprites + 2 BONUS new characters!

As with the Midgard pack, I have updated the sprites to my "v2" design. In this case, it's even more subtle and most of the dwarves have only had touch-ups and things like extra animation (such as hair) in their walk cycles. You can feel free to use v1 instead, if you prefer them. If trying to use v2, which is only native size PNGs se tup to plug and play w/ RPGmaker, you may need to refer to the below instructions to get your sprites working right.

Can I Make Requests?

Yes! If you would like a unique character sprite(s) done in this style for your personal project, please contact me using the below information. I will do these for pretty cheap and to your specifications, so please inquire!

Contact & Support

I am open to suggestions and feedback and am quick to respond to comments here. I am always looking forward to seeing what YOU make with my assets.

I am best reached through email: hedgewizardgame@gmail.com or by commenting right here on itch. Especially if I don't check my email enough!  You can find me on tumblr where I post art almost daily, focused mostly on my indie game The Hedge Wizard. I make other art as side projects or for fun. Any time I really get a bug to make game assets outside of my own projects and commissions, I'll probably put them on itch! If you'd like to commission my work or are simply curious to see more of it, please check out my tumblr or my Artstation page. I usually appreciate feedback, so please feel free to comment.

Hi, i recently purchae the asset but the version 2.7 cant be downloaded because the web detect a virus

Hi there. Just a clarification that the “2.7” is not the version number. The pack is called “dwarvesv2” and the .7z refers to 7zip, the program I use to create archives. 7zip is a very common and well known archive software but because it is an archive it will be flagged by anti-virus software just like an .exe would. It’s a false positive, in other words, there is only .png image files in the archive.

I get the same warning every time I DL something from the open web. If I may suggest, try googling about 7zip and virus detection and see for yourself.

how many directions are there available for the sprites? I need at least 4 directions. Cheers!

It’s always all four directions with my sprites. I just showcase front sprites to keep the gifs simpler and because front view gives a pretty good idea what a sprite looks like. That said, this isn’t the first time someone’s double-checked that so maybe I should start including screenshots that show off all 4 directions haha. Cheeres right back at ya!

Love your Nine Realms series, any chance you’ll release a tileset with the contents in the second image here?

(+1)

Actually yes. It’s nearly ready! I didn’t know ANYONE liked these since they receive a lot less attention than the Cyberpunk theme. Fantasy stuff is also kinda saturated on itch but I like to think I have my own take!

Do you wanna know some of the stuff that’s in various stages of development for this theme?

Oh yeah I think your fantasy stuffs great, while you aren’t wrong about the saturated state of fantasy assets finding quality might actually be a bigger challenge than on the sci-fi side of things. Definitely agree you brought a fresh take with the Nine Realms and honestly I bet the series would be getting all sorts of attention if it was indexing a bit better - I’ve been combing the market for about two months and I only very recently stumbled across it as it doesn’t pop under any of the terms I would think to use when blindly searching.

That said, yeah for sure - that would be awesome, I’d love to hear what’s going on with the development!

Not sure what I could do to improve the indexing. I’m pretty turned off/bored/confused by the metrics and hustle aspects of this stuff. I sometimes think I’d be more diligent and take my store and assets a bit more seriously (like… having a schedule for it) if I understood it all better but tbh I don’t think I’m wired the right way for that!

As for upcoming things, this will give you a taste:

  • I have an almost-ready free update to the Midgard Tileset that will include winterized variants of stuff like trees and ground tiles. It will also include interiors. It was a mistake not to include them in the first place (and may be something that hurts the assets, ppl might pass on stuff that’s too “incomplete” and I get that).

  • Tileset for the Nidavellir Dwarves, which you’ve seen a mockup of. The main reason that it’s just a mockup right now is that I haven’t done interiors yet. I don’t want to launch w/o that so I’m waiting. I know ppl regularly release packs that aren’t finished and just update them but I’m not super comfortable with that and I don’t like making people wait even though that’s what ends up happening anyway haha.

  • Character packs for Trolls, Light Elves, and Dark Elves are all underway and various stages. I’ll release these ahead of tiles in the same way I have so far with NR and my cyberpunk assets. This is just because I usually gravitate toward character design the most.

  • A “vikingr” pack incl. modular ship tiles and props. This is a toughie for me as an artist due to perspective challenges, but I chip away at it every so often. It’s funny cuz I have the exact same issue doing vehicles for the cyberpunk theme. Just not very confident/good at it.

  • In the further future, I would like to have character packs for the following: Aesir (Asgard), Vanir (Vanaheim), Frost Giants (Jotunheim), Fire Giants (Muspelheim), and undead/draugr (Helheim). Each of these would also have a corresponding tileset.

  • I want to do item packs, monster packs (Norse myth has a lot of interesting critters), etc to round out what a person will need for a JRPG. These would be things that are a lot further away just because I’m less experienced with that stuff. Even the cyberpunk theme still lacks many of these elements. I’ve also been asked a couple times to do more “action rpg” style animation variants for characters and may one day want to try that too. More animations in general, I guess. :P

Anyways, that’s kind of a roadmap?

Haha thats a great road map! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us - I hear you I feel the same with the metrics and marketing etc, only thing I’d offer on that is get all the generic ones cause thats what will lead people who are just searching for whats available to it (ie. top down, topdown, top-down, rpg, tileset, tiles, asset pack, pixel art, terrain, 4 directional, four direction, 8 directional, 8 direction, orthogonal, environment, character, fantasy, adventure)

Anyways this is awesome I’m super excited about what you have in the works, I’ve been sitting on a game I want to do as a pet project based all on norse mythology and relevant settings. I feel obligated to share the name cause it’s so relevant haha “Runeforged, Bathed in Aesir Blood” so I can’t tell you how excited I am to see the final products! and those character packs can find a place in all my worlds. I have a feeling a lot of people will be very stoked on all of those packs :)

Thanks for the tips. You’re right that there is kind of a classic set of key words, hashtags and corresponding assets that people need for full vertical on their projects. It is, of course, notoriously hard to produce good quality art for an entire game in a timely manner unless you’re 100% dedicated to it.

But comments like yours tell me there is an appetite for this stuff and I love making it and can certainly make it more of a priority.
