Retro Cybercity Gang Characters
A downloadable asset pack
Retro Cybercity Gang Characters
In the lawless streets of the broken future, anyone forming groups to get things done outside of sanctioned power structures risks being called a gang. But not all gangs are created equal, not all want the same things, and not all resort to the sensationalized methods that both glorify and demonize their way of life.
But then again, some just want to see the world burn and help it along the way.
This asset pack is for creators who are looking to try a cyberpunk or futuristic scifi aesthetic that takes cues from the analog era of the 1980s and 90s. Think Blade Runner or Ready Player One with an SNES/SEGA Genesis style color palette.
It includes a diverse set of character sprites with walk cycles ready for your game project, united by a "gangs" theme. The sprites are grouped and themed by five distinct fictional gangs reminiscent of common themes in cyberpunk fiction.
The pack is top-down perspective and scaled at 16x16. It can be used in various game development engines, including Unity and RPGmaker. The pack uses the palette BLKNX64 by @blkirl.
Housekeeping Notes:
Unless otherwise indicated, all materials are offered in PNG format.
I DO NOT use AI for any part of my creative process -- all of my work is hand-made in Aseprite.
All character sprites are presented with 4-directional movement and 3-frame walk cycles.
(the lack of an example in the sidebar is an oversight I'll fix when I can).
What Does It Include?
This pack includes 25 Total Character Sprites w/basic, 4 directional and 3-Frame Walk Cycles. Includes:
- 5 members of the "Mechapunks" anarchist cyborg gang
- 5 members of the "Sheilas" all-girl gang.
- 5 members of the "Bizbots" all-android gang.
- 5 members of the "Chrome Dandies" fancy upper crust gang.
- 5 members of the "Coppersnakes" flashy street gang.
- Each gang roster includes one or two NPC designs that could be cast as the leader of the gang. Up to you!
- The individual sprites have nicknames for organization reasons, but don't feel like you have to use them!
- Most of the sprites have very individual designs overall and can be used for other types of NPC -- heroes, villains, standard NPCs, up to you!
- BONUS -- Gang Logos included for the fun of it
Will There be Updates?
Probably, yes. I am unlikely to do another Gang pack with these same themes and if I come up with another five or ten or fifteen gangs, I'll do additional packs.
This means that any additional designs I come up with that could be members of these five would be added to this pack as free updates. Pretty sure this is gonna happen as I already have more ideas.
If you've got ideas or requests, please comment!
UPDATE 1:
Now updated to v2!!!
Been in the process of updating all sprites to a version 2 that includes the following:
- Brings this character pack in line w/ the other Retro Cybercity character sprite pack, "street characters"
- Now includes altered left-facing sprites when the character is asymmetrical, previously I simply flipped the side view sprites to save time.
- Now FULLY RPGmaker Compatible. Previously, the way the sheets were set up was not compatible. Now it should plug and play as long as you're using the right sizing (16x16) by default.
- Original versions of these sprites will remain in the pack as "legacy" content.
Below is an example of the types of changes made to the v2. For most sprites, it's the rear sprite that has the most alterations so I use this angle as an example though there are changes that apply to every viewing angle.

hello, I am really interested in all your "retro cyberpunk/city" stuff. does every package wok with RPG Maker MZ? are they 48x48 scaled or just a few sheets?
Hi there. Very happy to hear about your interest!
All of the Retro Cybercity stuff is RMMZ compatible. You would have to slice a few of the spritesheets yourself to achieve the right formatting for RMMZ. Some packs also include 3x upscaled sheets to work in the 48x48 sizing. The last couple of packs have not included this formatting.
The reason not all of the packs in this theme include those extras is because I am assessing what extra options like this to include in my stuff based on whether folks ask for it, it affects sales, or it takes a lot of extra work.
I am open to adding extra options to my packs if requested. I am also considering whether to make the packs plug and play with RPGmaker going forward. I designed my other theme that way to see how much extra work it takes. It’s a lot haha. But maybe worth it if helps folks like yourself.
Let me know if this helps and please don’t forget to mention if you’d like to see more options. More people tell me that, more chance I’ll add them and the faster I’ll do it. :)
EDIT (04/01/24 – but not an April Fool’s Joke!)
All my work is slowly being converted to full plug and play RPG Maker compatibility (at 16x16, you’d still need to resize depending on your needs). This means the sprites no longer need the sheets reformatted or resliced to achieve this.
wow,very very nice!
Thanks!
